Abstract

This book employs various theories of contemporary security studies to explore some of the most important and most common security issues in Central Europe at this time. Individual chapters of the book adhere mainly to European branches of critical and constructivist security studies, through which they look at some of the salient topics of Central European security politics. The distinction between internal and external security issues is employed throughout the book for analytical purposes. Under this framework, alliance building, security guarantees, “special relationships,” the relational politics of identity, and relations with major powers – documented in the book on the case of Latvia’s relations with United States – are examples of external security issues. Various pressing domestic security challenges, illustrated on the case of Hungarian far-right movements and their activities towards the Roma minority, are examples of internal security issues.

Abstract

"An exploration of the roles that pro- and anti-government militias, private armed groups, vigilantes, and gangs play in local communities in the new democracies of Southeast Asia. Scholars have typically characterized irregular forces as spoilers and infiltrators in post-conflict peacebuilding processes. The contributors to this book challenge this conventional understanding of irregular forces in Southeast Asia, demonstrating that they often attract solid support from civilians and can be major contributors to the building of local security - a process by which local residents, in the absence of an effective police force, develop, partner or are at least included in the management of community crimes and other violence. They analyze irregular forces' dealings with political actors at the community level, explaining why and how forces are incorporated in and collaborate with legitimate institutions without using violence against them. Offering a new approach to dealing with irregular forces in Southeast Asia, contributors explore new theoretical frameworks that are better suited for evaluating irregular forces' relationship to different security providers and the political environments in the region. Specifically, they examine case studies from Indonesia, Timor-Leste, the Philippines, and Thailand. A valuable resource for researchers, students and practitioners in the areas of conflict resolution, peacebuilding, and security governance, especially those with a focus on Southeast Asia. This book will also be of great interest to scholars of the sociology and anthropology of the region"-- Provided by publisher.

Abstract

"Gulf stability is coming to play a larger role in the foreign policy calculus of many states, but the evolving role of Asian powers is largely under-represented in the International Relations literature. This volume addresses this gap with a set of empirically rich, theory driven case studies written by academics from or based in the countries in question. The underlying assumption is not that Asian powers have already become important security actors in the Gulf, but rather that they perceive the Gulf as a region of increasing strategic relevance. How will leaders in these countries adjust to an evolving regional framework? Will there be coordinated efforts to establish an Asian-centered approach to Gulf stability, or will Asian rivalries make the region a theatre of competition? Will US-China tensions force alignment choices among Asian powers? Will Asian states balance, bandwagon, hedge, or adopt some other approach to their Gulf relationships? These questions become even more important as the western boundaries of Asia increasingly come to incorporate the Middle East. The book will appeal to scholars and students in the fields of International Relations, Security Studies, and International Political Economy, as well as area specialists on the Gulf and those working on foreign policy issues on each of the Asian countries included. Professionals in government and non-government agencies will also find it very useful"--

Abstract

"In a globalized world, the international economic crisis that started in 2008 has led to structural changes in the international system and in the balance of power: from a unipolar to a multipolar sphere; from the 'post-modern state' to the 'sovereign state'; from unrestricted integration in the global economy to the independent management of the economy itself; and, from trade integration at a global level to the fragmentation of the economic space in regional areas. In short, the transition from a unipolar to a multipolar trend seems to be reflected in the increasing fragmentation of the economic space and has repercussions in the strategic space and security. These changes are also affecting the 'discourse' that explains the process of globalization and the appropriate strategies to act on it. Until 2007 one could talk about a "Western model." But now this is a lot more questionable, and we might even talk of an outright censorship. The rise of emerging powers leads to the construction of a new 'narrative' adapted to the values that these countries embody, among them the strength and suitability to the principles derived from the sovereign state. A scenario where it is increasingly difficult to adopt the tenets of globalizing governance. Our aim is to provide an overview of all these structural transformations and assess those changes in the different areas taken into account in this book. We also aim to address possible alternatives, which may allow a coordinated management of certain risks, although regionally differentiated"--
